Trent joined our team for 12 weeks as an Investment Operations Intern. His most valuable take-away was upskilling his soft skills, learning the technical jargon associated with our platform and getting immersed in the day-to-day corporate life, which doesn’t happen at university.
What inspired you to apply for an internship opportunity at HUB24?
I have an interest in investment platforms and the fintech industry. I’m interested in how the platforms work, so I wanted to gain experience in a firm that was more on the medium-larger size such as HUB24. I decided this company would be the best fit for me, as I felt it would help me decide what future career paths in the financial field I’d want to take.
How would you describe the culture here?
The culture is very welcoming. Everyone here is happy to entertain your questions and hear your perspectives. It’s quite laid back in a comforting way but work still gets done! There’s been a lot of opportunities to mingle with colleagues and learn what everyone does. Since being an intern meant that I was working autonomously, my team was very supportive in pushing me to do work that was more aligned with my interests.
Did you have an opportunity to work on projects with other teams?
I did get the opportunity to work with other teams during my time at HUB24: they were mostly from the investment operations department in which I worked. It was great as I gained an insight to the overall bigger picture of HUB24. I got to work on a brainstorming project, which allowed me to learn about the processes that collectively make HUB24 what it is.
What skills did you learn during your internship that you can take with you to future opportunities? How do you think interning at HUB24 is going to impact your future career?
I learnt how to use systems I previously had no experience with such as Visio, which allowed me to create diagrams and map processes for my field of work. I developed my Excel skills too. I would say that the most valuable skills I acquired through this internship are the soft skills gained by being exposed to the technical jargon and everyday activities of the workplace. It also gave me a deeper understanding of the financial landscape. It has been fantastic to immerse myself in something new which required me to adapt and learn quickly, which I think will be highly applicable in the real world.
What advice would you give future candidates exploring internships at HUB24?
I would advise prospective interns to try their best before their interviews to attempt to understand what HUB24 does as an organisation and why it’s gained an advantageous market share position. I’d also advise them during their internships to be proactive in their efforts.
